What are Dulcolax Tablets?

Dulcolax Tablets are used for the short-term relief of occasional constipation. Dulcolax Tablets contain bisacodyl and belong to a group of medicines known as stimulant laxatives, which increase bowel movements. This medicine does not help with weight loss.

What is constipation?

Healthy and regular bowel movements are essential for most people. However, what is 'normal and regular' varies from person to person. Some may have a bowel movement every day, others less often. Whatever it is like for you, your bowel movement should have a regular pattern.

  • Constipation is an occasional problem for some people. For others, it may happen more often.
  • It happens when the typical muscle actions in the bowel (large intestine) slow down. This can mean that material is not easily eliminated from the body

The cause of constipation is often not known. It can be associated with:

  • A sudden change in diet
  • A diet with not enough fibre
  • Not drinking enough fluids.
  • Loss of 'tone' of the bowel muscles in older people
  • Pregnancy
  • Medicines such as morphine or codeine
  • Having to stay in bed for a long time
  • Lack of exercise

Whatever the cause, constipation can be uncomfortable. It may make you feel bloated and heavy or generally 'off-colour'. Sometimes it causes headaches.

It is recommended to use changes in diet and bulk forming medicines to control constipation before using this medicine.

These healthy tips are recommended to try to prevent constipation happening:

  • Eat a balanced diet including fresh fruit and vegetables
  • Drink enough water so that you do not become dehydrated
  • Keep up your exercise and stay fit
  • Make time to empty your bowels when your body tells you

How to take Dulcolax Tablets

For constipation: Adults (including the elderly):

1 to 2 tablets at night.

  • Swallow the tablets whole with water. The tablets should not be chewed or crushed.
  • Milk, antacids or proton pump inhibitors (medicines which reduce stomach acid) should not be taken within one hour before or after taking Dulcolax Tablets. This is because they will stop the Dulcolax Tablets from working correctly.

If you have not taken Dulcolax Tablets before, start with one tablet and increase to two if necessary. When your bowel regularity has returned to normal, the dose can usually be stopped.

Length of treatment

These tablets should not be taken every day for more than 5 days. If you need laxatives every day, then you should see your doctor to find the cause of your constipation. Overuse can be harmful.

What do Dulcolax Tablets contain?

Each tablet contains 5 mg of bisacodyl as the active ingredient.

What is Loperamide Hydrochloride, and when is it used?

Loperamide is a medicine to treat Diarrhoea (runny poo). It can also help with short term diarrhoea or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Loperamide is also used for long-lasting Diarrhoea from bowel problems such as Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis and short bowel syndrome. If you have a colostomy to give you a stoma (an opening in your stomach to collect poo from your body), Loperamide can help to slow down your bowel and make your poo thicker.

    Key facts of Loperamide

    • Diarrhoea which starts suddenly usually gets better on its own within 5 to 7 days. If you need immediate, short term relief, taking Loperamide can cut down the number of times you go to the toilet, and it makes your poo less watery.
    • Adults should take 2 tablets or capsules straight away if they suffer from short term diarrhoea. After this take 1 each time you do a runny poo.
    • Don't exceed the recommended amount. Exceeding the recommended amount can lead to serious heart problems (including a fast or irregular heartbeat).

How will it treat my symptoms?

Loperamide works by slowing down the muscle movements in your gut, so an increased amount of water is absorbed from your stools. This leads to your stools becoming firmer, and they're passed less frequently.

    What causes Diarrhoea?

Diarrhoea is usually caused by a bowel infection known as gastroenteritis. Other known causes are:

    • Alcohol
    • Appendicitis
    • Food allergy

If you are taking any other medicine currently, check the side effects to make sure that they do not cause Diarrhoea. Chronic or long-term Diarrhoea can be a symptom of a more severe condition, such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).

What is Fluconazole Fungal Infection Capsule?

This medicine contains Fluconazole, which belongs to a group of medicines called antifungals. These act to treat infections caused by fungi.

The medicine can be used to treat thrush (vaginal candidiasis). The woman’s sexual partner may also use it to treat associated penile thrush (candidal balanitis).

Thrush is a common infection caused by a yeast (or fungus), which may live harmlessly in the vagina without you even noticing it.

However, in certain circumstances, it may develop into an infection in the vagina, and symptoms may spread to the surrounding area. The symptoms may include one or more of the following:

    • Itching of the vagina and surrounding area (the vulva)
    • Redness and swelling of the tissues of the vagina and vulva
    • Soreness of the vagina and vulva
    • White non-smelling discharge from the vagina

Thrush may be aggravated by sexual intercourse, but it is not a sexually transmitted disease. However, sometimes thrush can be passed to your partner through sexual intercourse.

If your partner has penile thrush, he may have one or more of the following symptoms:

    • Soreness and redness of the penis
    • Tightness of the foreskin
    • A white non-smelling penile discharge

What is the recommended dosage for Fluconazole?

    • Check the foil is not broken before use. If it is, do not take the capsule.
    • Adults aged 16 to 60 years: Take one capsule once only.
    • Swallow the capsule whole with water.
    • Do not give to children under 16 years, or take if you are an adult of 61 years or older unless your doctor tells you to.
    • Do not take more than the amount recommended above.
    • Talk to your doctor if symptoms do not go away within seven days.
    • If your symptoms worsen at any time, talk to your doctor.
    • If symptoms clear up but then return after seven days, you can take another capsule, unless you had an allergic reaction the first time.

    What is in this medicine

The capsule contains Fluconazole 150 mg which is the active ingredient.

What are Anusol Soothing Relief Suppositories?

Anusol Soothing Relief Suppositories help to relieve the swelling, itch, and irritation of internal piles (haemorrhoids) and anal itching. It contains the following ingredients:

    • Hydrocortisone acetate is a mild steroid which helps reduce inflammation.
    • Zinc oxide and Bismuth salts are mildly astringent and antiseptic. They soothe and protect raw areas.
    • Balsam Peru is mildly antiseptic and has a protective action on sore areas and may help healing.
    • Benzyl benzoate has mild antiseptic properties.

    What are piles?

Piles (haemorrhoids) are swollen blood vessels which occur inside or outside the back passage (anus).

Some people have piles without experiencing any symptoms, but sufferers may notice the following:

    • Bleeding: Although streaks of bright red blood on the toilet paper are not uncommon in people with piles, it may be a sign of a more serious condition and you should see your doctor to check this.
    • Swelling: The swollen blood vessels may be felt as a lump or blockage in the anus.
    • Pain, itching and irritation in the anal region.

At least 40% of people suffer from piles at some time in their lives. However, many people are too embarrassed to seek advice or treatment and, as a result, experience unnecessary discomfort.

Fortunately, there is much you can do to ease the situation and relieve the symptoms.

    What causes piles?

Several factors can contribute to the development of piles:

    • The most common cause is straining during a bowel movement, usually because of constipation.
    • During pregnancy, the growing baby exerts increased pressure on the anal vessels, which can lead to piles.
    • Heredity: you may be more likely to develop piles if your family has a history of suffering.

A Healthy Living Plan for Piles Sufferers

You can reduce the risk of piles by following a healthy diet and lifestyle that helps to keep your bowels working regularly and prevents constipation. This can also help to speed recovery from piles.

    • Eat a high fibre diet including foods like brown rice, wholemeal bread, wholewheat pasta etc.
    • Eat plenty of fresh fruit, vegetables, and salads.
    • Drink plenty of water.
    • Don't eat too much salty, fatty, or sugary foods such as crisps, burgers, and cakes.
    • Cut back on the amount of alcohol, tea, and coffee you drink.
    • Exercise regularly.

A healthy diet and lifestyle will reduce the likelihood of constipation and encourage a regular bowel habit. Go to the toilet regularly and try to avoid straining. Leaning forward from the hips may help.

How to use Anusol Soothing Relief Suppositories

Anusol Soothing Relief Suppositories should be inserted into the anus

    • Wash anal area and dry gently with a soft towel before using this medicine.
    • Remove plastic cover from the suppository before use.
    • Wash your hands before and after using Anusol.
    • The suppository will melt after insertion.

Adults and the elderly: Insert one suppository into the back passage (anus) far enough so that it doesn't slip out, at night, in the morning and after each bowel movement.

What do Anusol Soothing Relief Suppositories contain

The active substances per suppositories are: Hydrocortisone acetate 10 mg, Zinc oxide 296 mg, Bismuth subgallate 59mg, Balsam Peru 49 mg, Bismuth oxide 24 mg and Benzyl benzoate 33 mg.

    • Use your first finger (index finger) or middle finger to push in the suppository

    • Lower your legs to a comfortable position whilst the suppository is retained in place

    What is Lactulose Solution?

Lactulose is used to treat constipation. Lactulose is not metabolised or absorbed by the body, and the substance helps pull water into the colon, softening the stool. Lactulose also works by promoting peristalsis, pushing food through the digestive system.

    This product is recommended for:

    • Children with constipation.
    • People who recently underwent surgery.
    • Older adults or people with severe or chronic constipation

Children: Initially take 10-25ml daily for first 2-3 days then 5-15ml daily or according to the need of the patient.

Dosage does not appear to be related to the age or weight of the child and should be adjusted to produce the required response.

Lactulose isn't absorbed into the bloodstream and is not known to be harmful if used during pregnancy or breastfeeding. However, as with all medicines, you should get medical advice from your doctor before taking lactulose in pregnancy, or if you're breastfeeding.

    What Is Moviprep Original

Moviprep is a lemon-flavoured laxative in four sachets. There are two large sachets (‘sachet A’) and two small sachets (‘sachet B’). . You need both for one treatment. Moviprep is intended for adults to clean the bowels so that they are ready for examination.

Moviprep works by emptying the contents of your bowels, so you should expect to have watery bowel movements.

    How To Use Moviprep Original

Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure. The recommended dose is two litres of solution, which is made up as follows:

    How To Prepare

    • Open one clear bag and remove the sachets A and B.
    • Add the contents of BOTH sachet A and sachet B to a measuring jug that holds 1 litre. Add water to make up to the one litre mark of the container and stir until all the powder has dissolved and the Moviprep solution is clear or slightly hazy. This may take up to 5 minutes.
    • Drink the first litre of Moviprep solution over one to two hours. Try to drink a glassful every 10 - 15 minutes.
    • When you are ready, make up and drink the second litre of Moviprep solution made up with the contents of the sachets A and B from the remaining bag.
    • During the course of this treatment, you are recommended to drink a further one litre of clear liquid to prevent you feeling very thirsty and becoming dehydrated. Water, clear soup, fruit juice (without pulp), soft drinks, tea or coffee (without milk) are all suitable.

What are Laxido Orange Powder Sugar Free sachets?

Laxido Orange contains macrogol 3350 and the electrolytes sodium chloride, sodium hydrogen carbonate and potassium chloride. Macrogol 3350 is a laxative used for the treatment of constipation, especially if you have been constipated for a long time. It is also used to treat a build-up of hard faeces in your bowel which may be a result of long-term constipation (this is known as faecal impaction).

Macrogol 3350 makes your faeces softer and easier to pass, giving you relief from constipation. The electrolytes help to maintain your body’s normal levels of sodium, potassium and water while you are being treated for constipation.

How to use Laxido Orange Powder Sugar Free sachets

Always take this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as your doctor, pharmacist or nurse have told you. Check with your doctor, pharmacist or nurse if you are not sure. Laxido Orange should be taken orally.

Laxido Orange should be made up by dissolving the contents of one sachet in a glass of water (125ml or a quarter pint). Stir well until all the powder has dissolved. If you are being treated for faecal impaction, you can dissolve the contents of all eight sachets together in a large container (in one litre of water).

What is Dulcolax Pico Liquid Laxative (Sodium Picosulfate) 5mg/5ml Oral Solution?

Dulcolax Pico Liquid Laxative Oral Solution is used for the relief of short-term occasional constipation. Dulcolax Pico Liquid contains sodium picosulfate and belongs to a group of medicines known as stimulant laxatives, which increase bowel movements. This medicine does not help with weight loss.

    What is constipation?

Normal and regular bowel movement is important for most people. However, what is 'normal and regular' varies from person to person. Some may have a bowel movement every day, others less often. Whatever it is like for you, it is best that your bowel movement has a regular pattern.

Constipation is an occasional problem for some people. For others, it may happen more often. It happens when the normal muscle actions in the bowel (large intestine) slow down. This can mean that material is not easily eliminated from the body.

The cause of constipation is often not known. It can be associated with:

    • A sudden change in diet
    • A diet with not enough fibre
    • Not drinking enough fluid
    • Loss of 'tone' of the bowel muscles in older people
    • Pregnancy
    • Medicines such as morphine or codeine
    • Having to stay in bed for a long time
    • Lack of exercise

Whatever the cause, constipation can be uncomfortable. It may make you feel bloated and heavy or generally 'off-colour'.

Sometimes it causes headaches. It is recommended to use changes in diet and bulk forming medicines to control constipation before using this medicine

How to use Dulcolax Pico Liquid Laxative (Sodium Picosulfate) 5mg/5ml Oral Solution

How to use Dulcolax Laxative Suppositories

Always use this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Check with your pharmacist if you are not sure

If this medicine is from your doctor or pharmacist, do exactly as they have told you. Otherwise, follow the instructions below. If you do not understand the instructions, or if you are not sure, ask your pharmacist or doctor

As with all laxatives, Dulcolax Twelve Plus Suppositories should not be used every day for more than 5 days. If you need laxatives every day, or if you have abdominal pain which does not go away, you should see your doctor

    How to use the suppositories

The suppositories should only be used in your back passage.

    • Take off the foil wrapping
    • Lie on one side and pull your knees up towards your chest. Keep one leg drawn up more than the other
    • Use your first finger (index finger) or middle finger to push in the suppository
    • Gently push the suppository as far as possible into your back passage, pointed end first
    • Once it is as far as it will go, push it side-ways to make sure it touches the wall of the bowel
    • Lower your legs to a comfortable position whilst the suppository is retained in place
    • Keep the suppository inside you for at least 30 minutes

If you feel the suppository might come out straight away:

    • You may not have put it in high enough. Push it in as far as possible
    • Try to keep it in for 30 minutes, even if you feel like you urgently need to go to the toilet. This is how long it takes to work

    How much to use

Adults and children 12 years and over: Put one 10 mg suppository into the back passage for an immediate effect (they usually have a laxative effect within 10 to 30 minutes). Only use one suppository per day. This should not be used in children or adolescents under the age of 12 years

What do Dulcolax Laxative Suppositories contain

    • Dulcolax Twelve Plus 10 mg Suppositories contain 10 mg of the active ingredient bisacodyl
    • The suppositories are made from hard fat, which is an ingredient needed to mould the suppository into the correct shape
