What are Loratadine Tablets?
Loratadine is an antihistamine medicine that relieves the symptoms of allergies. It can be used to treat conditions such as:
- Hay fever
- Conjunctivitis (red itchy eyes)
- Hives (urticaria)
- Eczema
It is also used for reactions to insect bites and stings and some food allergies.
Loratadine is known as a non-drowsy antihistamine. Therefore it is less likely to make you feel sleepy than some other antihistamines.
Key facts about taking Loratadine
- It's usual to take Loratadine once a day.
- Loratadine is classed as a non-drowsy antihistamine, but some people still find it makes them feel slightly sleepy.
- Children may also have a headache and feel tired or nervous after taking Loratadine.
- It's best not to drink alcohol while you're taking Loratadine as it can make you feel sleepy.
When to take Loratadine
You may only need to take Loratadine on a day you have symptoms, for instance, if you've been exposed to a trigger such as animal hair. Or you may need to take it regularly to prevent symptoms, such as hay fever during spring and summer.
What occurs when I have allergies or hay fever?
When an individual suffers from allergies such as hay fever or has an allergic reaction to dust mites or pet fur, your body reacts to whatever substance that activates and triggers the allergy. It does this by making a chemical called histamine, which causes the symptoms of an allergic reaction. At this point, you may suffer from itchy or watery eyes, a runny nose, sneezes and coughs.
How does Loratadine alleviate hay fever symptoms?
Loratadine tablets contain an antihistamine which is 10mg Loratadine which blocks the histamine. This results in the Loratadine tablets directly blocking the cause of allergic reactions within your body. This is the mechanism by which Loratadine tablets work to provide quick and effective relief to protect you against hay fever or allergies.
How to take Loratadine tablets
Loratadine tablets can be administered to adults and children aged within the ages of 2 and 12 as long as the child weighs more than 30kg. Loratadine tablet should be taken once a day, orally with a glass of water.
