Discomfort in the ... : Is it Piles?
The gastrointestinal (GI) tract is a long muscle that runs from the mouth to the anus. The upper part of the GI tract covers the mouth, stomach and oesophagus, and the lower part of the GI tract (the bowel) covers the anus, rectum and intestines.
The main function of the GI tract is to transport food and liquid to the stomach from the mouth, which is then (a) broken down into important components and nutrients and absorbed into the bloodstream or (b) used in the production of waste material, which is then expelled from the body via the intestines.
Problems can occur at any stage of the GI tract. In this article, we will discuss piles.
What are piles?
Piles (also known as haemorrhoids) are itchy, painful lumps that develop in and around the anal passage when anal veins swell. Commonly piles are associated with swelling, discomfort, painful defecation (pain when passing poo), constipation and feeling that the bowels have not completely emptied. Piles usually resolve by themselves over a few days.
No question is too personal or shameful
If you are concerned or unsure about your symptoms, do not hesitate to seek help from your pharmacist or GP. You are more aware and better informed about your body than ever—trust your gut feeling if something is wrong.
Prevention is better than cure
Anyone who has suffered from piles will know how painful and uncomfortable they can become. Therefore, it is highly recommended that a healthy lifestyle be implemented to avoid episodes of piles.
