Overview

What is Acne

Acne is a common skin condition that affects most people at some point. It causes spots, oily skin and sometimes skin that's hot or painful to touch.

Acne is a common skin condition that occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil (sebum) and dead skin cells. This leads to the formation of pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, and sometimes more severe forms like nodules or cysts. It most often affects the face, forehead, chest, upper back, and shoulders.

Although acne cannot be cured, it can be controlled with treatment. If you develop mild acne, it's a good idea to speak to a pharmacist for advice.

What causes Acne

Acne is caused when tiny holes in the skin, known as hair follicles, become blocked. In acne, the glands begin to produce too much sebum. The excess sebum mixes with dead skin cells and both substances form a plug in the follicle.

Normally harmless bacteria that live on the skin can then contaminate and infect the plugged follicles, causing papules, pustules, nodules or cysts.

There are several factors that contribute to the development of acne:

  • Excess Sebum Production
  • Dead Skin Cells
  • Bacteria
  • Hormonal Changes
  • Inflammation
  • Diet
  • Stress
  • Genetics
  • Medications
  • Skin Care Products

What is Differin 0.1% Cream

Differin contains adapalene which is a type of medicine called a retinoid. Adapalene is used to treat skin problems such as acne and can come in either a gel or a cream.

Differin is used to treat mild or moderate acne where the skin has whiteheads, blackheads and just a few inflamed spots. If your skin is dry, it might be more suitable to use Differin cream. If your skin tends to be oily, Differin gel is more suitable.

If you have widespread, inflamed acne on your shoulders, back or other parts of your body, or moderate to severe facial acne, Differin may be combined with an antibiotic to help improve the appearance of your skin.

How to use Differin 0.1% Cream

You should use Differin the evening before bed. Gently wash and fully dry the area you want to treat before applying a thin layer of cream or gel using your fingertip. Make sure to wash your hands afterwards.

Avoid letting the cream or gel build up around the angles of your nose, eyes and mouth.

Make sure to only use other medicated skincare products if advised by a healthcare professional. These should be used in the morning when Differin is used at night.
